Categories and collections are designed to help you organise templates and campaigns for both the end user recipient and for your own administrative purposes. To help explain the concept, have a look at the example set of collections and corresponding categories below:

  • Ex. Collection: "Communic8 Internal Comms"

    • Ex. Category: "Onboarding"

    • Ex. Category: "Internal News"

    • Ex. Category: "Company Policy"

    • Ex. Category: "Events"

    • ...

  • Ex. Collection: "Communic8 Client Comms"

    • Ex. Category: "Support"

    • Ex. Category: "New Features"

    • Ex. Category: "Product Roadmap"

    • ...

Think of collections as folders which themselves contain other folders called categories. You can then associate templates and/or campaigns to categories. You may be thinking, how do collections and categories impact the administrator and/or recipient experience? To answer that, let's see how they are used by an administrator:

Administrative Use

  • To create or edit collections and categories, see "Managing Categories" and "Managing Collections" further down in this support article.

  • If a category has been set to "Pin to Dashboard" on the admin console, then that particular category will display any templates that have been associated to the category on the dashboard page. This is typically done to push templates up to the dashboard to give them higher exposure for other administrators to use.

  • Campaigns created from a template will inherit any of the template's associated categories automatically when the campaign is created.

  • Campaign categories can be edited from the campaign details page under "Content Details" > "Edit Details"

Recipient Use

  • Users of the mobile app and Hub may see collections and categories if they have received campaigns which have been associated with a category. These will display in the "Categories" section and possibly the mobile app homepage.

  • Within the categories section the user will see each category text title, and under the title they will see campaigns they've received for that category.

  • It's possible that a user of the mobile app will see a collection text title, with a set of category cards under it. The user will only see categories for which they've received a campaign which has the category associated with it. Note: See image further down in this support article of a collection of categories.

Managing Categories

When creating or editing a template, it can be added to one or more categories. They are used to easily classify the type of communication the template is. Only a Super User can create or edit categories.

  • Navigate to Admin > More and select Categories

  • You will be presented with a list of categories from which you can choose to edit a particular category or select the plus icon in the bottom right-hand corner of the admin console to create a new category

  • When creating or editing a category there are several options which must be considered:

    • Category Text: This will be the category name that is displayed from the select list when assigning a template to one or more categories. The category text will also be displayed in various places in both the admin console and for end users who view their communications on the mobile app or in their Hub (web view of the mobile app)

    • Colour: This colour will be applied to the category text on the mobile app and Hub

    • Pin to Dashboard: This will place the category on the console dashboard and display any templates that have been associated with that category (if the user has permission to view the template). If no templates have had this category assigned then the category will not display

    • App Layout: Determines how the campaign cards will display within the category on the mobile app:

      • Grid: A 2x2 grid that scrolls vertically

      • List: Vertical scrolling (swipe up or down)

      • Scroll: Horizontal scrolling (swipe left or right)

      • Staggered: Similar to a Pinterest layout style where vertical heights of each category vary randomly and scrolls vertically

    • App Item Size: The size to display the campaign cards in this particular category

    • App Max Display: Max number of campaign cards to display under the category on the mobile app

    • Category Image: When categories are viewed within a collection, the optional image will display as the background within each category section (see the example of a collection of categories further down in this support article)

    • Category Description: Currently is not being utilised in the mobile app or Hub.

    • Category Order: Defines the order in which categories should be displayed when viewed in a collection or on the category page.

Managing Collections

Collections contain categories, which in turn are associated with campaigns and templates. Only a Super User can create or edit collections.

  • Navigate to Admin > More and select Categories

  • Select the top tab titled Collections

  • You will be presented with a list of collections which you can choose to edit, or you can select the plus icon in the bottom right-hand corner of the admin console to create a new collection

  • When creating or editing a collection there are several options which must be considered:

    • Collection Name: This will be the collection name that is displayed within the mobile app and Hub which will contain categories.

    • Categories: The list of categories which you would like associated with the particular collection.

    • Colour: This colour will be applied to the collection text on the mobile app and Hub

    • Pin to Dashboard: This will place the collection on the mobile and Hub dashboards. The collection name will appear with all category cards for which campaigns have been received for that category for that recipient.

    • App Layout: Determines how the category cards will display within the collection on the mobile app and Hub:

      • Grid: A 2x2 grid that scrolls vertically

      • List: Vertical scrolling (swipe up or down)

      • Scroll: Horizontal scrolling (swipe left or right)

      • Staggered: Similar to a Pinterest layout style where vertical heights of each category vary randomly and scrolls vertically

    • App Item Size: The size to display the campaign cards in this particular category

    • App Max Display: Max number of category cards to display under the collection on the mobile app and Hub

    • Collection Order: Defines the order in which collections should be displayed when viewed in the mobile app or Hub.

Category & Collection App Layouts Explained

As mentioned previously, Communic8 currently supports 4 types of layouts in the mobile app for campaign cards & category cards.

In the image below you will see examples of each layout style within a category. Note: these are examples of campaign cards displayed within a category. It's important to note:

  • layouts support varying campaign card sizes. The examples below are using a "medium" card size

  • layouts can be applied to categories (campaign cards within the category) and collections (category cards within the collection)

Category Layout

Collection Layout

Collections, and the categories contained within them, have the same layout configurations. Collections provide the same 4 layouts and the same app item sizes.

In the example to the right, you will see a collection titled "Communic8 Categories", with 7 categories contained within. Each category has a background image which was uploaded through the admin console.

When the user selects one of these categories, they will be taken to that category page and be presented with all campaigns they've received which were associated with that particular category.
